A Re-conceptualisation of 'Culture Shock' through the Lens of Cognitive Dissonance Theory - Giorgia Faroni
'Culture shock' has been criticised terminologically and conceptually, yet it is still a frequent buzzword in academic and non-academic conversations. Through the lens of cognitive dissonance theory, I re-frame the concept of 'culture shock' and propose a new model to better understand the ups and downs that sojourners may experience abroad. This re-conceptualisation is based on my research findings on the affective challenges and coping strategies of two UK language undergraduates during their year abroad in Italy. Over the course of 14 months, my participants' accounts provided unique insight into their study abroad experience, including their personal and linguistic journeys and their perception of the outbreak of the pandemic and the consequent national lockdowns. In this talk, I will present my re-conceptualisation of 'culture shock' and discuss the practical and theoretical implications of my model. I will provide relevant examples from my qualitative longitudinal case study as well as taking into consideration the impact that the pandemic had on it and on the broader field of study abroad research.
