CLER Conversation: Culture and identity in the learning of L2 pragmatics during study abroad. A longitudinal narrative study - Xiaowen (Sherry) Liu

Previous studies have suggested that study abroad is potentially a fruitful period for L2 pragmatics learning. Existing research in this field shows two tendencies: investigations are usually focused on specific pragmatic phenomena and contexts; and L2 learning is usually assessed through comparison with language choices made by native speakers of the target language. This presentation is based on a longitudinal narrative study which tracked the experiences of five Chinese postgraduate students sojourning in the UK. It aims to expand our knowledge by shifting the focus: (1) from pragmatic forms chosen by researchers to moments of learning noticed and considered significant by learners themselves; and (2) from learners’ approaches to the native-speaker standard to how they understand sociocultural meanings behind the L2 and negotiate interpersonal relationships. Findings indicate that linguistic barriers and unfamiliar conventions can hinder SA students from expressing themselves and negotiating relationships in the way they desire. This process appears to be uncomfortable for some learners, but it seems to prompt learner reflection on interpersonal connections and self-positioning. The findings have implications for institutions and tutors in higher education on how they might help international students gain a stronger position in their adopted communities through providing pragmatic-specific support.
