CLER Conversation: Promoting social justice in language classrooms through dramatizing children’s literature - Dr Deniz Ortactepe Hart

Educators in all disciplines play an important role in the struggle for social justice, English language teachers being no exception (Hastings & Jacob, 2016; Hawkins, 2011; Nieto, 2010, Ortactepe Hart & Martel, 2020). Social responsibility projects that require language learners to build bridges between course content, their own lived experiences and the local communities play an important role in developing their critical consciousness while also engaging them in social action (Flores, 2004). In this presentation, Dr. Ortactepe Hart will first talk about the Social Justice in ELT project she has been carrying out with Turkish pre-service teachers since August 2018. Next, focusing on a social responsibility project carried out by a pre-service English teacher, she will discuss the benefits of dramatizing children’s literature in terms of helping learners develop their language skills while also challenging the stereotypes and biases they have around race and gender in ways that developed their critical awareness and empathy. This presentation overall showcases how and why language teachers can benefit from the transformative nature of language classrooms to discuss issues such as race, class gender, and sexuality and to bring about social change in societies at large.
