In this talk we discuss a project in Viet Nam which encouraged English language high school teachers, in collaboration with their learners, to develop pedagogies suited to the needs of learners from ethnic minority groups. We share examples of puzzles and how teachers explored culturally responsive pedagogies through classroom projects with their learners. The project introduced a novel approach for a group of teachers in a remote area of Vietnam, and enabled learners to actively engage in communicating about their lives. Building a community of practice which valued the experiences was not without challenges, and we note the need to be flexible and finely aware of cultures large and small.
